Did you know that...
- Cereal bars and chilled ready meals are gaining popularity with service station customers
across Europe - anticipating a market rise of 6% year-on-year for the next few years.
- A poor wheat harvest worldwide in 2007 has affected Canada in particular, which is down almost
20% on last year's production figures. Supply shortages combined with sustained demand have already
fuelled substantial price increases, which reached a 10-year high recently in Europe.
- Maple sugar and maple syrup are healthier, especially for diabetics, than ordinary sugars
and honey since the maple products have a lower Glycaemic Index rating; this means
that their natural sugars are processed by the body more slowly, thus keeping blood sugars
more stable.
- A recently published study into the speciality and fine food sector in the
UK has valued the market for delis and farm shops at almost 274 million GBP,
up 8.8% year-on-year. Prospects for the sector look resilient in spite of uncertain economic
times, as people prefer to treat themselves to good food rather than spend on more
expensive material items such as plasma TVs.
- A 4-year EU-funded study, the biggest ever into the properties of organic food, has recently
proved that it is more nutritious than ordinary produce, with organic fruit and vegetables
containing as much as 40% more antioxidants and higher levels of beneficial minerals such as iron
and zinc. Milk produced by organic herds was found to contain up to 90% more antioxidants than
milk from conventional herds.
